I don't think Sasuke would get stomped. Just lose to Neji med or high-diff at that point. Though, towards the end of pt1 Sasuke has a chance at beating Neji med or high-diff himself because he gained a better grasp of CM powers. Just my opinion.

Gaara stomps Neji. Neji can outmatch Sasuke. Sasuke is Gaara's worst opponent before he transforms.

It's one of those triangular set ups where each person has a good and bad match up.

Sasuke > Gaara
Neji > Sasuke
Gaara > Neji

Makes sense...I am guessing Sasuke was the 3rd or 4th strongest person in the chunin exams.

Neji and Lee were both older since they took off an extra year to train as a team before doing the exams. Gaara had a tailed beast since he was conceived and his sand involuntarily protects him.

Meanwhile, Sasuke with just a 2-tomoe sharingan at the time was compared with them. Sasuke was really talented.

True. But the fact that a rookie with two tomoe was compared with a jin and two people who trained for a year in advance is impressive nonetheless.
