Nope, his agrument for vegeta was quite inconsistent, as for goku that was just his character fault, you can see the development and personal of the character in many ways.
But he was right about the plot elements tho, that shit a was terrible writing.

Vegeta did try to kill his fellow sayains. Than he spouted about sayain pride. Even so, I still believe Vegeta was by far one of the best characters from DBZ. I really loved what he said about Goku though. I never thought about that.

I dont think any element in DB is inside Slam Dunk or even inspired it, no, and look current new breed like Kuroko no Basket, can you find any DB foaa element in it KoA. Never exist any.
DB is just influancing only a part of manga genre that is shonen only that can be said as FOAA to all manga, but just Shonen only, but stil, DB cant be consider as Shonen FOAA, that title is belong to Astro boy.
What make DB popular is because thier plot story is more open and readers freindly compared to fist of the north star as example. And also it easy to related, it actually for kid entertaiment for the most part, kid like what, fighting, flashy thing, action, hero thats all. And that what Akira focus on, it like jaco, the galactic petrolman series, it very childish short series. You think shonen genrd is most classy manga genre in entire manga industry? Nope. The classy manga series is like detective conan, slam dunk, bakuman, death note, as example.
what make DB is not the best series is because it to heavy in fighting and if there a no fighting, this series become boring as hell. Look when gohan in teen years goes to higu school,to study, if akira not put fight scene, sure this series will lost it power until main characters kick someone a**. And it all fight until the end. Critics will said this series is one liner series, without fight this series will going down, but if fighting happen it will get excited back. Cant you see the flaw in this series KoA. You only say Astro Boy solely because it's older than DBZ. What you need to understand is that DBZ became much greater and it actually achieved unrivalled feats that can't be repeated ever again by another anime. DBZ is the FOAA of all anime genres so accept the truth and move on. If it's the most popular anime of all time then that's another reason why it's the best because no other anime has built a bigger fan base.
