Naruto has been trying to save Sasuke for the entire manga. To me this is less about predecessors and more about the relationship between Sasuke and Naruto. Even Nardo said they aren't like their predecessors in the latest chapter. They will settle this with a fight. Sasuke might live but in my opinion he doesn't deserve another chance. He needs to pay for his actions.
