Is Itachi a criminal?

Some say he was a hero, some say he was a criminal. The fact is the he killed his entire clan for the greater good, or so they say...
Could the genocide have been avoided? Could Itachi have said no to Danzo/Hiruzen? Could Itachi have warned the Uchiha? Could Itachi have helped the Uchiha escape? Was he to young to know better?

Was genocide his only option..?

Yes, he could have killed Danzo, he was well capable of it at that age.
