Base on manga facts,Indra chakra/spirit choose which shinobi from his blood line to reincarnate different generation.

We have not heard about Itachi being Indra selected host for Indra reincarnation.Therefore ,this mean Sasuke being selected one ,could be stronger than itachi in the past?Sasuke had all the hatred toward Itachi from the beginning of the series till Itachi death.I believe that if Itachi did push Hebi sasuke more during theirh battle,Sasuke may have unlock indra powers then kill him during the heat of the battle.Uchiha powers is drawn from hatred ,explained by Tobrama.

I still think Itachi is stronger than Sasuke but looking back at that fight, I would say both were pretty much equal as Sasuke couldn't match Itachi's MS techniques and Itachi was already suffering from a disease.

Indra was Adam of the uchiha clan,which mean he had the full powrs of the Uchiha clan generation.Itachi born of the uchiha clan but he not choosen by indra,which make him inferior indra choosen

it's clear Indra didn't go to itachi because he would of only held Itachi back, Since both Itachi's Skill/Talent and Genius far surpassed his own.

Sasuke was second best, Just like he was for Oro, Since Oro knew Itachi was out of his league so he went for the left over scraps (sasuke).
