Warning: This thread shows scenes from throughout the anime. If you are planning to watch HxH, then there are spoilers. If You are reluctant to watch it because of it's childish appearance, then I reccomend taking a look at this thread.
There is a misconception among some that Hunter x Hunter is childish. This is mainly because of the childish appearance of the characters and some of the posters.
I assure you that Hunter x Hunter is not at all childish and I will explain why.
(Yes, it is childish compared to more adult anime like Seinen anime. I am comparing it to mainstream Shonen anime)
Firstly, look at the rating given by Myanimelist.net. HxH (2011) is rated R for violence and Profanity. Naruto and Bleach are only rated pg-13.
There are things in HxH which are usually not shown in other Shonen anime. For example, in Hunter x Hunter (2011) there is a scene of 2 children being eaten alive. It is rare in shonen anime for children to be scene dying at all, especially not in such a brutal way.
The fight scenes (mostly after the first season) are epic and intense, and some are just as bloody as a Bleach battle.
There is a particular disturbing scene where a guy forces two people to be his "pet dogs". If you think this sounds funny, trust me it isn't. It is sick and disturbing.
Now I don't mean to exaggerate. Certainly there are more violent and less childish Anime, even among shonen anime. HxH is not overly violent and doesn't contain that much adult material. ANd just many other shonen anime there are certainly scenes that are childish. My goal is to explain that it is not as childish as it may appear, and it is certainly just as intense as many other shonen anime of the same Genre.

VIOLENCE
Yes, Hunter x Hunter is a violent anime. While it is less bloody than Bleach, the violence in Bleach is often overly bloody in an unrealistic way. HxH (sometimes, not always) has more realistic violence (guns, broken bones etc.) which gives it the higher rating.

Scenes of Torture
It is rare to see things like torture in Shonen anime. You see it occasionally. I recall there being a little in FMA:B. I did lose some respect for Naruto when Jiraiya tortured people by tickling them and turning them into frogs.
