First, this is in the wrong section. Second, you forget that Itachi doesn't require eye-contact to cast genjutsu period. You seem to have forgotten Izanami and Izanagi, two techs which Gaara doesn't have intel on. Furthermore, Itachi is a master strategist would would easily find holes in Gaara's defense. Not to mention, he has KA.
I forgot to add... The Databook rates him faster and smarter than Gaara.
What about vice versa? Itachi has the ocular advantage in almost every other category, not to mention he can see gaara's moves before he executes them.
Using shunshin to move closer & to an area where gaara's third eye isnt focused on will be easy, especially considering gaara's eyesight is limited.
Waltz did however say that using the third eye will still be ineffective so im curious to see your counter. :heh:

1. Izanami wouldn't work on Gaara and was never even meant for combat, initially. Izanagi means Itachi loses his eyesight. You're coming here to my thread trying to debunk it and you don't even have a legit argument.
2. Itachi gave Shisui's Eye to Naruto, he doesn't have KA.

@Waltz, it's gonna take me a minute to get into your post.
Gaara glanced into the eyes of Uchiha Madara.. He would do the same to Itachi who is a much lower caliber Uchiha. Madara is arguably the superior of the two, in regards to Genjutsu-Prowess. Gaara shall look into Itachi's Eyes [Sharingan or Mangekyō Sharingan] and immediately lose due to his genjutsu. Gaara didn't make it against Madara; he shan't against Itachi.
Amaterasu.. Yes, Gaara's Sand can withstand such but it's not fast enough to react to it. Nor have I heard of Gaara having any notable sensory skills to "feel it coming" [Not Dirty]. Adding to previous section, Gaara commands his companions to look closely, implying he did identical. What does that mean?
This is solely subjective to Gaara being cognizant of Itachi's arsenal and an advantageous terrain....Otherwise Genjutsu ends this. Now the Sharingan is able able to discern the mechanics of all Ninjutsu, Taijutsu and Genjutsu without restriction and goes on to enable the user to accurately predict all movements of the opponent in sight. Gaara is already at an initial advantage due to Tsukuyomi; a Genjutsu cultivated from the Mangekyou which can be activated via eye contact and as the Kazekage's initial notion in this battle [your route] is not to defend eye contact but rather execute the timely process of 'flight' then a 'third eye' leaves him vulnerable to Itachi's special version of the Genjutsu: Moon eater. It is a Genjutsu sparked solely on eye contact.
Now even if the third eye is employed; it makes little difference. If we examine the rudiments: Genjutsu affects chakra flow to the brain, meaning, though the Third eye is not an biological attachment, it evidently functions identically as one and must relay the information seen to the brain via the aforementioned chakra connection. Light clusters that travel from the object to the eye pass through the lens, where it is severed and falls reversely on the retina at the back of the eye. Here, via this chakra connection the light is converted into electrical signals that are transmitted to the center of vision in the back part of the brain thus enabling Gaara to see through the eye. Itachi simply manipulates this connection and Gaara is ceased. Amaterasu is another counter but it has already been highlighted:
Now as Gaara cannot constantly battle Itachi without making Eye contact [give or take the few moments he would be able to do so] and that he is unable to anticipate the pinnacle Genjutsu Tsukuyomi; he would eventually be caught and if he manages to survive would have maintained a critical decline in his battling ability and mental stability. Itachi employs the Genjutsu a second time finishing him off. Given that Itachi's Tsukuyomi and his Dusk Crow Genjutsu solely requires eye contact; it means that they may be used inter changeably yet jointly with something such as a Kunai strike to the neck or Totsuka to finish. As regards Amatearsu and the employment of Ketai Henka over the technique; as your scan has elaborated; the armor of sand covers Gaara through his own will, highlighting that it is not an automatic response to stimuli by the sand itself but rather Gaara's anticipation of the incoming attack which may be intercepted by Amaterasu if his immediate defenses are occupied countering other jutsu. Itachi's physical prowess, highly notable reflexes and complex use of bunhsin, and the fact that his speed was a '5' as opposed to Kimmimaro's '4.5' is sufficient to say that he would able to avoid the high speed sand while on foot and the Sharingan has already

Gaara's sand.
Nothing but a timely process with various openings for Itachi. Karasu Bunshin would allow Itachi to close the gap between the two and also allow him to attak from both within the air and on land as well as enforce Genjutsu. The mere fact that Itachi is knowledgeable of his arsenal, Gaara wouldn't have time to grind sand and it is highly questionable if he can take to the skies given: Tsukuyomi [as mentioned above]. Found it rediculous that Gaara would ascend to the heights at which he fought Deidara when there is absolutely no reason to do unless he intends to lose sight of Itachi. In as much as Gaara's ability to manipulate earthen elements it ultimately amounts to nothing if he cannot breach Itachi's Genjutsu and intellect. The fact is, Gaara cannot kill Itachi; a substantive defense such as the V1-Susanoo's ribcage is sufficient to prohibit any type of Sand burial and even if faced with with jutsu such as

I'm just bringing up that he doesn't know about them. What about Izanagi, no response to that. Also, which era of Itachi are you talking about? He gave he crow to Naruto before his death. You never put a specific time restriction on him. And it isn't my opinion seeing as he is quickly able to deduce weaknesses of Jutsu. That is his battle philosophy.

Itachi wins mid diff. The Sharingan alone reads movements ahead of time, and you can't even look itachi in the eye without getting caught in his genjutsu. Plus he's a brilliant fighter.
What about Yasaka Magatama?
But whatever.
Gaara still does win though.
And Amaterasu would be a minus for Itachi in every single way..... 1. Its a waste of chakra. 2. it doesn't hit him...
and 3..... Gaara can just use those flames and control his sand to attack Itachi.
I'm sure by now, you've noticed my name. If not, you have now. Now, you're assumption may be that I'm a fanboy, but let me assure you, I am not. I put Itachi exactly where I think he deserves to be based off what I've seen, same as any character. Thing is, people are too afraid these days to really break down Itachi and show what he's capable of, since they'll be labeled as "fanboy". Well, I'm going to try and make a logical and much needed case for this hax and broken character; Itachi.
Itachi is in fact sitting at my number 5 spot in the top ten, behind (in order) Hashirama, Madara, Rinnegan Obito, and Nagato. You may agree or disagree, but keep in mind it's my opinion based off what I've seen from him.
So let's start. I'm going to be breaking down Itachi's abilities, weapons, strengths, and weaknesses. Please have the patience to read. Thanks!
Abilities/Techniques
Itachi is one of the most balanced shinobi we've seen in the series. He's proficient in all fields (Genjutsu, Ninjutsu, Taijutsu) and one could argue he's even beyond proficient in all 3.
Obviously, when looking at his genjutsu, it's second to none. You could say Shisui, but since he has next to no screen time, Itachi is the best consistent user of Genjutsu in the Manga. Tsukuyomi, Finger Genjutsu, Body Genjutsu, Crow Genjutsu... The guy is a Genjutsu expert. Fighting and opponent you can't even look at is, obviously, ridiculously difficult.

His Ninjutsu could almost be seen as just impressive. Amaterasu, Susano'o, Wide Variety of Fire Style, Shuriken Jutsu, Body Flicker (to a degree), and crow clones are incredibly useful and provide an array of strategies. Susano'o is extremely formidable. If he gets in a tight spot, Susano'o can be put up in a matter of miliseconds.

Then we have his Taijutsu, which while it is his most unimpressive, is still proficient. A bloodlusted Itachi (controlled by Kabuto) was able to spar with a KCM Naruto. That should speak for itself.

Weapons
Just as every shinobi has their tools, Itachi has his own he is more than proficient with.
When considering shuriken, Itachi's skill surpasses most; It's been mentioned multiple times throughout the series that his shuriken jutsu is extremely impressive. A great example is when Itachi managed to blind a Rinnegan user, with nothing but advanced shuriken skill.
However, moving on to his more impressive tools. I'm talking of course, about Yata Mirror and Totsuka Blade.
Yata Mirror is one of those things that puts Itachi in the Top 5 for me. Yata Mirror was stated by Madara's Will to be invincible. Now, considering Madara would more than know what he's talking about and we have seen nothing to suggest otherwise, Yata Mirror IS invincible. True, Itachi himself stated every jutsu has it's weakness. Thing is, this isn't a jutsu. It's a spiritual weapon.

Totsuka Blade, while not as formidable, is impressive nonetheless. We've never actually seen it stab moving target, but common sense suggests that it can be used as an actual sword for swiping and killing targets. A sword of that speed and magnitude is not to be messed with.

Strengths
I realize this is getting lengthy, so I'll try to condense these next parts.
Itachi has been portrayed as one of the most intelligent and tactically superior shinobis in the series. When it comes to planning ahead, figuring out weakness, and creating strategies, Itachi is rivaled by few, such as Minato.
Itachi's intelligence is another defining quality that puts him in my top 5. Yata Mirror, coupled with his intelligence, gives him time to formulate strategies to defeat his opponents. Even without Yata Mirror, Itachi has enough speed and reaction time to avoid most attacks without expending very much chakra. His intelligence wins him battles, of course with his massive array of techniques and weapons.
His ability to keep a calm and cool head under pressure is one shared by many other shinobi, but in his hands with his intelligence, it's a deadly tool.
That being said...
Weaknesses
He has none.
I kid, I kid. Itachi's main weakness, that next to everyone knows, is his low chakra reserves. Thanks to a mysterious disease he is afflicted with, Itachi's chakra pools have diminished over the years.
This low stamina provides a counter to his OP techniques. Susano'o, Amaterasu, etc., will sap him of his chakra if he uses them too early or too much.
However, as stated before, Itachi is not a moron. He knows he has low chakra reserves, and knows he must not squander them. Itachi will make great use of his chakra, at key turning points in battle.
A misconception about his battle with Sasuke is that Itachi lost because he ran out of chakra and stamina, and died of exhaustion. While it's true that's how he died, people forget how he actually got to that point. Obito flat out stated afterwards that if Itachi had wanted, Sasuke would be dead. The whole thing was a show; Itachi was spamming techs to dwindle his chakra to make it appear as if Sasuke has beaten him legitametly. In reality, Itachi wasn't challenged by Sasuke.
Conclusion
So there you have it. That's my whole discussion. Hopefully I managed to convince you Itachi is at least top ten; he should at least be credited that.
I was just trying to say about Itachi what I think a lot of people neglect due to fanboys.
Doesn't Itachi speed blitz? Gaara can't react to speed.
Plus Itachi wouldn't/doesn't lose because his moves seem ineffective. Gaara can't hit him as well. Also, 3 tomoe reads movements ahead of time so...its a tie.
All of their moves are ineffective.
Sasuke solo's though Kimi also solo's. Sasuke has flight and speed that > gaara not to mention lightning release.
