I just watched a few episodes from the chuunin exams (Gaara vs Rock Lee) and I realized how good of a story it was back then. The K11 were such amazing characters and they all had a role in the story. Ninja fights were actual ninja fights. The bad guys weren't a bunch of OP crybabies. The tailed beasts seemed like unbelievably powerful beings (remember the fight against the 1 tail?). Kurama was a badass demon not a bro. Kunais and shurikens were useful. There was no such thing as fodder.
The message was that if you work hard you can do anything and that your destiny isn't fixed (this whole message was completely destroyed in shippuden). Look at it now, Naruto is the child of the prophecy (so his destiny was fixed). And look where Lee's hard work got him, he's done nothing in all of shippuden and is still doing nothing in the war.
Where did Shippuden go wrong? They introduced way too many characters and didn't focus on all of the ones that people had grown to love.
Don't get me wrong, I love shippuden. The Akatsuki are the best bad guys out there. But last night I just realized how much better part 1 was. Imagine if the K11 actually played a part in the story. The only arcs that captured the real Naruto feel were the Hidan and Kakuzu arc and the invasion of Pain arc. Probably because there actually a sense of threat and they used characters that we like.
Shippuden would have been ten times better if they focused more on the K11 and the Akatsuki. But now all the Akatsuki are dead and the k11 are just irrelevant and boring.
If you think Shippuden even compares to part 1, I guarantee this opening will change your mind. Prepare for major feels.
