I honestly wouldn't hate/dislike a character because of their fanbase. The only thing to really dislike is the fanbase itself. But Itachi's fanbase is the worst. And Kabuto's probably as well.

Can honestly say that nothing I have ever seen written here has influenced me to dislike a character. The more rabid fanboys do give me a chuckle sometimes, makes me remember when I was young and thought in absolutes of black and white.
Still these characters are entirely Kishimoto's. What is ultimately true or untrue about them is entirely up to him and not really reliant on the whims and wishes of a handful of readers bogged down by the emotional maturity of a nine year old. I like or dislike them according to how their creator has chosen to portray them and look forward to seeing how the story of Naruto finally plays out.
