I can commend Hinata's character for growing out of her own shadow from before, even though it used Naruto as motivation, but at this point... Naruto hasn't so much as acknowledged her feelings and she even heard him say (and didn't react to) him telling his dad that Sakura was "more or less" his girlfriend. The fact that she is STILL using those feelings for Naruto to push herself forward, rather than just the tutelage Neji gave her and her own inner strength, makes her seem like a weak and male-dependent character.... and due to that, the inherent "submissive women" stereotype of Asian cultures is perpetuated in her. She was designed according to the Japanese "ideal woman" type, and unfortunately seems that she is not going to grow out of that as a character.

Sakura is a tsundere. Doesn't get much more Japanese than that. Only western created character I can think of that even begins to approach tsundere is Miss Piggy.

Also this thread is really bringing something to light. There are a lot of males in here who keep commenting that they like Hinata then cite how she is "traditionally Japanese" and "submissive."

Absolutely not the only one. Part of the reason I pointed out that she was the "ideal Japanese woman type", and molded entirely around Naruto's character, was to illustrate how she, as a character, is at her very core a misogynistic view of how women SHOULD be. Sakura, on the other hand, is a character that, at HER core, illustrates how women like to view themselves, or at least how they tend to act outwardly while having an inner conflict as she usually does. Hinata doesn't have such conflicts with her emotions. It makes Sakura's character have a bit more depth, even if it is at times frustrating to read. Hinata being as transparent as she is just makes her boring, "ideal" or not. Keep in mind, Japan is a traditionally male-dominant society, and they still haven't gotten past that entirely.

I much prefer Sakura for her depth and growth of character. She used to be a snobby little brat with little talent other than her extreme intelligence and superb chakra control, but unlike her teammates had neither the vast chakra reserve, the complete conviction of emotions, and lastly she didn't have near the repertoire of ninjutsu Sasuke and Naruto had.

She's come a long way. Hinata has too, in terms of ability, but Sakura has grown emotionally. Again, Hinata managed to grow as well, but she can't seem to develop as HERSELF independently, without an utter reliance on motivation from Naruto. Sakura has her own conviction... just took a long time for it to really show.

I have much respect for those who fight for their country but when youre shoving it in peoples faces because youre losing an argument (which hes done multiple times) ESPECIALLY on a Naruto forum, I lose all respect. While I have endless respect for those who fight for their country if you take advantage of that fact for anything other than good youre trash. He is obviously NOT an honorable vet, if a vet at all, so Im not going to treat him like one. A true veteran has no need to act high and mighty on a manga forum, many of my family members are/were in the army so I mean absolutely no disrespect to true veterans. Its clear this guy is either a little kid pretending to be a vet to get respect or a loser that has nothing better to do than brag about it on a forum that consists of AT LEAST 60-75% little kids. Why would a veteran do that? He wouldnt. So even if he was a veteran I lose 100% of my respect for him when hes trying to shove it down little kids throats to make him seem better than they are. While veterans absolutely deserve the utmost respect they are people just like us and they have no need to make themselves feel superior. If hes a true veteran he needs to act like it instead of acting like a whiny little kid (which Im pretty sure is his true form).
