My mums birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks and I was thinking of getting her jewellery but that's a little mainstream. What do you think I should get her? I might have a tighter budget because I have to buy a plane ticket to go out and see her but here it is:

Budget: $800
Age: She's middle aged, older than 30, younger than 45.
Hobbies: Cooking, painting, piano & sewing.

I know what the best present is but the problem is I can't get my hands on it. She did these paintings when she was in her 20's and she won a whole lot of prizes (beautiful paintings) and she always told me she needed to get new frames for them and it's been in the garage for a couple of months collecting dust and I just know she would love it more than anything. Maybe next year

I just need to get her something which shows that I love her and as a bonus to beat whatever my brother's getting for her. Call it sibling rivalry ;)

Question; Why can't you get your hands on it?

Any who, regardless of what you get her - extravagant or not. She will appreciate it, your mother does not expect material things but the love, care and respect that you show towards her.

I'm sure getting a "lame" picture of you and your brother and framing it with a note saying "Thank you for everything" will make her heart melt.

Are you sure you are not asking about gift for your girlfriend(or wife, some members are really aged)..
If its really your mother than follow GreenTeaChloe's advice.

I can't get it because it's at my parent's house and I can't fly out twice. Lame picture? It's probably the only physical non living items she cares for!

She already knows I lover her and respect her but you know how birthdays are, I can't not get her anything

Maybe some cool musicbooks with some piano sheets for her to play?
Or maybe some other instrument what she could try if she realy likes music. for 800 bucks you should be able to score a cheap violin I think? :x

When I mean "Lame" picture, i mean those corny ones. Getting a photograph professionally taken of you and your brother and framing it. It shows that you went out of your way to organize something like that.

Hmmm, well if you are already visiting and doing the dinner then you should probably suprise her with something she really likes(Maybe new paints, a canvas, etc.). All Moms like flowers. I'd buy the biggest bouquet with all sorts of her favorites. You should never have a rivalry with the other sibling when it comes to getting something for a parent though. Because most parents like whatever both kids get equally. I'm sure whatever you do get her she will appreciate and love.

Amen to that. For my girlfriend it's just jewellery, flowers, chocolates, dinner & a movie. We're done! But for mums you have to put a little more effort into it

I got 2 weeks to think, I'll come up with something

Bingo! Thanks so much. This is what I got so far: Flowers (big bouquet), canvas, new paint, jewellery & hopefully I can sneakily frame the paintings without her knowing :snick:

This birthday is important because she worked so hard to help me pay my uni fees, I graduated uni and now it's my final year of practising in a hospital to being an Orthopedic Surgeon.

I owe all my success to her and my dad :T_T:
