It would seem that Orochimaru was indeed crying for Konoha, he didn't tell Hiruzen the truth back then:

It would appear that not everything is as it seems, that Orochimaru had a hidden motive as to why he tried to crush Konoha.
I think it has something to do with his parents:
Since Kishimoto loves making characters parallel each other:
Then it stands to reason that Sasuke, who parallels Orochimaru, have the same grudge against the leaf.
Their parents' deaths.
I think Orochimaru tried to take vengeance on the Leaf in retribution to his parent's death, it is also logical to assume that Konoha had a hand in his parent's demise, the same way that Konoha had a hand in the Uchiha Massacre.
