Mission Start

Meet with the leader of the Rebels

Panthalassa was resting well from his injuries, even with the help of Barney's medical techniques, the fatigue from this whole expedition was starting to pile up. There were more moments of peace and quiet than before, as Barney and Panthalassa took turns taking naps and sleeping, yet they still merrily chatted away. They were now coming to a crossroads in their journey. On one hand, they had already gone through quite a lot, seeing as they had taken out a few villages, and stolen quite a lot of important scrolls and data, and this could already be considered quite a lot of service done towards the Rebel's cause.

On the other hand, they didn't feel like they had done all that much, at least not something that could have direct implications to undermine Madara's rule. With the exception of a few minor characters, no one directly involved in the upper echelon of the Village Hidden in the Valley had actually showed up. Myke was too irrelevant for the cause of the Rebels to have any clear plan of their plans.

Panthalassa looked at Myke once more, studying him. He and Barney had met him at the outskirts of the Village Hidden in the Valley's domain. From what they had gathered, Myke Hauk was a periferal leader of an outer branch. His role was to serve as scout for landmarks that weren't directly affiliated with the Village. Barney had come up with the theory that he wasn't even a scout, but rather a glorified manager of rebelious groups popping up outside the scope of the actual rebel mission.

They had inquired Myke, with no clear direct answer. He appeared to know about the ex-Captain that was leading the Rebellion, and seemed to have participated in the first wave of insurgence. But as the rebellion had met with some resistence, many of the less commited members would invariably take the chaos that ensued to move onto less upstanding moral stances. A clear Main group of Rebels, acting under the Ex-Captain, would act within the Landmarks owned by the Village Hidden in the Valley, while several stragglers would take the chance to "act" under the rebellion to self-appease their own interests. Myke and the like were a response from the Ex-Captain to contain and indirectly restrict these stragglers, which were not in the best interest of his plans, but, for the moment, were a good distraction and chaotic element to spread discord over their enemy.

Panthalassa and Barney had discussed to length, away from Myke's ears, that it wasn't necessarily a bad plan, to have these glorified managers deal with these hoodlums for the moment, while they are useful to reap discord, but that, if the Ex-Captain ever plans to take over the Village, he needs to have a way to deal with them and cut them off, while also have his own name clean from being associated with them. Which was all fine and dandy, but it still left Barney and Panthalassa more connected with Hoodlums rather than the actual Rebel Movement.

According to Myke, the Ex-Captain base was settled within the secret forests of Yakukotan, which was the ground zero of a horrible zombie plague that swept over the landmarks. It was one of the events that Madara merely overlooked and the population was left to suffer on their own. The Murk Plague, set off by the infamous Isabella Uchiha, as a vanity project of the Sage of Deceit that was solely targetted towards Madara Uchiha, and it was clear that any civilian was just an unfortunate bystander of their rivalry. Within this discord, the Rebels had taken ground helping the villages that were afflicted the most, while undermining the rule of Madara.

It took a while to reach the meddow where the rebel base was, but every journey would meet it's end. The camp was set with multiple brown tents climbing up tree trunks and branches. Busy soldiers would roam from place to place, while several children and elderly populated every corner of this makeshift city of fabric and filth.

Panthalassa spread out his legs, stretching his whole body from the voyage, before turning in to both Barney and Myke Hauk.

I guess we're here, where is this leader? I'm hungry.

Coming from Pingmay (38)

This post contains a B rank storyboard mission called: Reflect on past events and consider your future options

Barney could tell that the pill he gave Panthalassa started wearing off. Now, he could give him another one, but it would start becoming risky for no real reason. A good old nap would probably be better at the moment. This is why they exchanged turns as they took their naps during their travel, while the other one kept an eye on Myke and the rest of the hoodlums.

Closing his eyes, Barney could only see one thing and those were the flashing floodlights as the alarm turned on in the research center when he stole the data for himself. He was burning with desire to get to his lab and to see everything that was hidden in there. However, he knew that it wouldn't happen for a while so he put that on a backburner. This vision exchanged with vivid dreams of him meeting with Tiamat and becoming one of her children. Every dream would start the same, where Barney would be surrounded with darkness and with his senses suspended where suddenly out of the dark, the figure of Tiamat would shine bright and flash before his face, reaching with her hand towards him and placing her hand onto his forehead. A change would happen within Barney and he would always gasp for a breath and suddenly wake up, just to realize that the carriage hit a bump on the road.

As he woke up, he signaled to Panthalassa that it was his deserved turn followed by a stupid joke that he thought of in his dreams. They would laugh for a bit and Panthalassa would be out before you could say when. Myke seemed to fancy himself with a nap as well so there was nobody for Barney to talk to so he reminisced of the events that they've been through so far and what crossroads might be be ahead of him and how he would approach them.

They started out by pure chance, bumping into each other in Keishi. Before that, they haven't seen each other since the end of the raid and they were really happy to meet again. This sparked a brilliant idea that they could join forces and set out on a journey to see how the world was breathing. The current situation in the geopolitical realm portrayed Madara as a big mean baddie and a rebellion formed against his reign, primarily because Taniagakure, the Village Hidden in the Valley, has not established a dominant or highly centralized influence in the region of which has led to a natural power vacuum forming, giving certain lingering brigand factions in the region the opportunity to attack and subjugate smaller villages for their scarce resources. One such opportunity presented itself to Barney and Panthalassa and they sided with the rebels, helping them with their agenda against a mob of farmers. The result was getting acquainted with their makeshift leader named Myke Hauk. Under his leadership they were also lead towards Bulanshaat, a village renowned for their fuuinjutsu mastery and the goal there was to steal a prized scroll and towards the Fujiwara university research center in Pingmay where they had to deal with a bunch of scientists and to destroy the research they conducted and their accumulated knowledge which Barney faked and stole for his own selfish purposes. These lead to this point in time where they were moments away from meeting with the true leader of the rebellion and hopefully learning the true agenda of their cause.

For what it was worth, Barney had an ultimate goal that he was working towards and he would do whatever it took to achieve it. His limited knowledge of the workings of the world didn't allow him to skip to the end, but instead resulted in picking up crumbs along the way and slowly piecing the puzzle together. However, the picture became clearer by the day. One thing was for sure. No matter the outcome of this meeting, Barney would have two options of which both would require him to leave the Hellsing organization if he wanted advancement. It became apparent to him that the Hellsing organization was an anchor that was dragging him and slowing him down. While it was a great stepping stone and ultimately resulted in meeting his new best friend, this snoring beauty over there, he had more fun and became more involved with the world in the last few days with Panthalassa and Myke than he did with the Hellsings in the last few months. It was a decision that wasn't easy to make, but one that had to be done. He knew the consequences and accepted the risks it came with. As a parting gift to the clan, he advanced their interests, weakening the Land of Fire and attributing to its destabilization, which could prove beneficial to the Land of Lightning. Barney decided to wait for the opportune moment to share this decision with Panthalassa and would ask him to relay his messages to Alucard when he would get the chance, as he had no intention to go to Dainashi any time soon. The advancement of his own goal was his ultimate priority for the time being.
He scribbled a nice letter for Alucard and expressed his gratitude and feelings, thanking him for the guidance he gave Barney and explaining the situation at hand. He apologized but knew that Alucard would understand. There was always a point where an apprentice would surpass the master and that was Barney's goal. In the letter he promised to make Alucard proud nevertheless. As he finished the letter, he placed it into his pocket and sealed it away for the time being. When the moment came to split with the Aburame he would entrust him with the letter to give to Alucard.

A sudden "I'm hungry." tilted him out of his thoughts and they arrived at their destination.

"Me too." he said.

Mission end.

“Halt!”

A voice boomed from across the Rebel’s camp, several men appearing before the travelers – guns and arrows aimed them. The patrol guards of the Rebel faction had gotten intel of suspicious men approaching the near the campsite, and almost on instinct the ranged platoon was commanded to take action. The men were stern, eyes completely focused on the stranger’s chakra started to build up in the guns and arrows, some already set ablaze. However, before the projectiles could be released, a voice can be heard from behind the platoon. “At ease” a tall man approached, his eyes glaring at the soldiers. Almost immediately the platoon reacted to his command, swiftly withdrawing their attempt to attack. He would have cleared his throat, as he then turned to meet the gaze of the men. “Ah, I see who it is” he chuckled a bit, as he folded his arms. “You three have been causing some trouble for Tanigakure from what I gathered. Panthalassa Aburame, Barney Yuki and Myke Hauk” he said. How he knew their names would possibly be question they may prompt towards him, but his information network was vast and shouldn’t be underestimated. “What brings you here, may I ask” he started things off. It was Captain Niashin, the leader of the Rebels.

Panthalassa and Barney both stepped in to talk, in their utmost leisurely and nigh overbearing demeanor, but they were surprisingly cutoff by Myke Hauk himself, who raised his arm and interposed himself before they could approach his captain.

Sir!

He said, giving some sort of military salute, and bowing his head a few notches lower than he was supposed to.

I'm Lieutenant Myke Hauk, from the advanced outpost of Matsuzawa. I'm so sorry for abandoning my post but the situation changed and it forced me to adapt to the new circunstances for the betterment of our mission!
These are Panthalassa Aburame and Barney Yuki, they appeared in the sacking of the Shoo bourg and managed to balance out the losses of both the food reservoirs, farmer's life and the runnaway rebels. They showed great promise and I was able to guide them into several holding points of the Village Hidden in the Valley landmarks, where they managed to successfully break every knot that have been in our mission's path for several weeks.

They retrieved the Key Scroll of the Bulaanshat Fuuinjutsu Masters, and killed the Hyuga Envoy Stu Pid Hyuga. We have used the Key Scroll to infiltrate the Scientific Data Bureau of Pingmay and destroy their base of Data, Info and Operations, cutting off the communication and data bank of the entire southwestern bank of the Hidden in the Village territory.

Myke Hauk now fell on the ground, bowing to his captain, hoping that, despite abandoning the petty task he was given, that he could still prove his worth to the Mission. Surprisingly, both Panthalassa and Barney stood there silently, their eyes going back and forth between Myke and his Captain.

Then they stared at Captain Niashin, waiting for a reply

Captain Niashin watched as the man approached forward, immediately identifying himself and what he’s been doing with this lot. The captain shook his head, quite literally already acknowledging that the trio was doing justice. He took a deep breath, as he coolly tilted his head to the side. “Well, I commend you for being quite honest about your actions. Abandoning your post was a punishable offense, but in return your actions proved fruitful to our cause. It’s hard to stay mad at that, all things considered” he said, but one thing did not set well with him. The cutting of the banking, sure it funded the village at large but his own agents that resided within the village would have their own funding cut short, which in truth cuts off some of the supplies Niashin had. “You three did well, but with some of our monetary resources now cut…it’s going to make the insiders we have to basically double down on their work and find other sources of income…” he scoffed. “Anyways, what can I do for you lot? Want a reward or something?” he nonchalantly jested to them, though there was a hint of curiosity in his speech.

"Sir..." started Barney but got rudely and selfishly interrupted by Myke. He was out of line and Barney was slowly becoming visibly agitated with him. To Barney, it seemed as if the Captain addressed him because he paused his look at Barney for a moment.

"I was hoping I could be transfered to a senior officer position within the camp. All this travel is bad for my joints. I'll get my team stationed and help with any... thing..." but Myke slowed down his spech to a full stop as he saw the Captains face and how he became agitated as well. Myke exchanged glances between him and Barney and then took a step back.

"Sir, we are sorry for the trouble we may have caused with the funding. We had all the best intentions. I'm sure we can work on finding an alternative method to repair the damage caused." said Barney politely while giving Myke a scorning look. "We would like to thank you for offering a reward but there aren't many earthly things that satisfy us. We decided... " he looked at Panthalassa ignoring Myke since they met him after the fact and was more of a nuisance at this poont, "to join forces to explore the world and to understand the turmoil that the world is going through. We saw the latest reports about your fraction growing in an attempt to overcome the rule of Madara and we think it's a worthy cause." he stopped for a moment." However, I have to admit, we don't really know anything about this Madara and his significance. We would like to get involved more thoroughly but for that we need a better understanding of the situation at hand. We think that with our field experience and battle prowess we can help you a lot but in turn would like to be included in some of the decisions that would serve to advance the interests of the rebels. Our interests." said Barney with his arms spread to include everyone around them and then pulled them in and placed them on himself to include himself as well.

Niashin’s somewhat irritated look couldn’t help but grow a bit more apparent, watching Myke’s expression change when started to make a request of transfer. However, before he could follow up, Barney would begin to speak up now – apologizing about the trouble of the financial situation. He also requested to join forces with Niashin and rebel cause, citing to want to learn more about Madara and company. “That man is the reason Tanigakure is in shambles. How can we, the Children of Hanguri just stand by idle and do nothing…” he muttered to himself as he turns. It wasn’t an answer to Barney, but rather Niashin contemplating why he is doing what he does. “Madara killed the Nidaime, who kept food in our mouths, helped bring the village from the brink of extinction where Shodaime failed. He’s a murder, a thief and worst of all…” he now meet the gaze of Barney and company again. “a worthless leader. That who is Madara Uchiha, but I’m afraid that alone doesn’t satisfy you, does it?” he crossed his arms again. “From what my intel gathered, he’s going around looking for certain individuals…to amass some kind of organization. He’s also aiming to capture the Bijuu, for whatever reason is beyond me right now. If you two wish to join forces with me, then continue doing what you can for us. For the people” he turned towards one of his men and nodded.

The man quickly disappeared and reappeared, kneeling as he held a scroll in hand. He would grab it and presented it to the others. “I have a task for you then. The people in the heart of Tanigakure are suffering, if you want to incite more to our cause, go and recruit more. Bring them here to our camp for safety, but more importantly…burn the Kage Mansion to the ground. Show them that they no longer need him and his…Shinobi who operate directly under him. The Rebellion will succeed and the people of Tanigakure will be freed” he said, with an assuring look in his eyes. He was determined to make the empire of Madara Uchiha fall to it’s knees. Inside the scroll was blue prints of the mansion and it's weak points, making the operation much easier. "As for you, Myke. I'll see to it that your...request is handled, so sit tight" Niashin said, as he turned to head back into the camp.

Panthalassa had stood pretty silent through this whole ordeal, and, honestly, even started to snooze a bit. But as he loosely heard what the captain had to say, Panthalassa's bug senses tingled. Captain Niashin pretty much concluded the meeting and sent them on a dismissive mission. Even if it was not suicidal, it was, at least, very vain.

Sorry Mr Captain-San. Hate to be that guy but, what's in it for us? This Madara dude seems like a piece of work, and...

He said, dramatically gesturing towards Barney.

Both me and my friend wholy agree you guys should take him out

In the background, Barney enthusiastically agreed, though mimiking the obviously sarcastic mannerism that Panthalassa had adopted.

But if all your rebellion plans are about burning villages and terrorizing citizens of the Hidden Valley, I think we can all agree that attacking the heart of the Village and burning the Manor would be considered the apex of your entire plans. So, my confusion is... why are you asking us to do what seems to be the primary and final goal of your entire endeavour?

Because, you make it seem like it's a "proof of allegience" type of mission, to see if you can trust us... but I'd expect something along the lines of raid this particular village or something like "Myke is such a trusted member that I'm going to show you this particular thing that shows how right we are and inspires you to join us"...

I mean, and...

He said, dramatically gesturing towards Barney.

Both me and my friend agree, so far you guys seem much more like bullies than Madara Uchiha.

The Aburame would be the next to speak, almost off timing as Niashin was about to enter his war tent. The guards of the campsite immediately became irritated with these two, as they started to charge their weapons once more with chakra. “Watch your mouth about how you speak to our leader!” one of them yelled, prompting the others to agree. Niashin was glad he had such loyal men and women working for him on this goal, but he would personally turn around to address Panthalassa. He didn’t come close, he simply remained by the tent entrance. “Eye for an eye” he said in a matter-of-fact tone. “Madara brought this upon himself, not me or any of us. We tried the reasonable approach, but it yielded no results…but guess what?” he said, turning on his heel, gesturing to his refuge camp. “Oh, who said anything about burning villages? Terrorizing citizens? I have literally brough the elderly, children, women AND men who wanted nothing to do with this…rebellion or wants to be apart of it willingly” he said, a smug look on his face. “I even ordered you to bring with you after your mission anyone who wanted to freed from the oppression of the Kage here. Burning the Kage Mansion is the in fact an apex of my plans…but it’s not the finale. The true finale…well that’s to be discussed another time” he said, turning back to the tent. “I’m not forcing you to do anything, it’s as simple. Prove that your down for the cause or not, the choice is yours” Niashin glanced back once more, gesturing for his men to stand down once more. He left to his quarters, wondering what choice the bunch will make. They would make amazing allies in the long run, but alas he was not going to force anyone to be apart of his rebellion, but anyone whom was on Madara’s side…they will burn and die for their foolishness.

The captain left the scene and his men immediately followed suit. Myke Hauk however gave Panthalassa and Barney a blank look first and then left as well, gone with his own group of rebels. Within moments, the pair was left standing there alone. In silence. Everything Panthalassa said was correct and Barney wholeheartedly agreed, as could be seen from his reactions. However, after the captains final say, he was left with a burning uncertainty. The captain wasn't wrong. He didn't order them to do anything. He gave them a choice. Multiple choices actually. They could've gone ahead and destroyed the Kage mansion, but they didn't have to. They could've recruited more rebels, but they didn't have to. They could've said thanks but no thanks, yet they didn't. If they were so against being used, they certainly would've left already. It was apparent that both of them were uncertain about what to do and how to proceed.

"Brother, what do you think?" said Barney as he started to walk away from his position. "Let's head out and discuss what we should do." he said hoping that Panthalassa would follow him. They walked down the main road out of the campsite and made their way toward the capital.

"I have to be honest with you. I've enjoyed the time we spent together more than anything and I want to spend even more time together, since we make such a good pair." ("ARE YOU IN LOVE?" a question disrupted his thought.) "However, I am still on the course to uncover more information about lady Tiamat and her children. It is still my goal to join her side and to become one of them." ("THAT'S THE SPIRIT! YOU GO GIRL!" it echoed.) said Barney with a glisten in his eye. "I also didn't stumble on you accidentally. Let's just say, there was a higher force at play that brought me to you." confessed Barney ultimately.

"If this Madara is gathering an army, wouldn't it make sense that he's connected with Tiamat somehow?" ("DUH?" it pestered.) "The abilities of her children are unparalleled and I don't see a stronger army than them. My instincts are telling me to seek out Madara and to not pick up a beef with him any further." ("YES! YES! YES! MUAHAHAHA!" the wicked voice echoed through his mind, disrupting his thoughts as Barney tried to keep his concentration.) "To be honest, I've had this feeling after we stole the scroll from Bulanshaat. But then again, what if my instincts are wrong" ("NO! THEY'RE NOT!" the voice kept nagging.) "and Madara sees me as an enemy and decides to end me?" ("YOU F*CKING COWARD. YOU LITTLE SCARED MANCHILD." screamed the voice louder and louder, echoing through Barney's mind.) finished Barney with a troubled look on his face and sound in his voice. These were tough questions. ("NO THEY'RE NOT. YOU PUS*Y." it kept getting worse.) Questions that nobody had an answer to. ("I DO! I DO!" and worse.) Not even the void itself. Deciding moments laid before the pair and Barney sought advice from his good friend. ("YOU WEAKLING! WE DO NOT RELY ON OTHERS! WE! ARE! HORRIBLE!" it kept pushing, until finally Barney snapped.) "SHUT UUUP!" he screamed from the top of his lungs, out of the blue. This certainly startled Panthalassa for a moment, but it wasn't the first time he saw Barney like that. ("OH WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT! THE QUEEN IS ALIVE AFTER ALL!" the horribleness was satisfied that Barney addressed it finally. That was it for now, as it receded back into his consciousness.)

"But please. Apologies for my selfishness. Tell me do you have any goals for yourself and what can we do to achieve them?" asked Barney apologetically after he took a deep breath and calmed down. "What should we do?" he asked with concern as they walked out of the landmark.

In all honestly, although Panthalassa had conducted himself in a very sardonic manner, his question was true. If he were to embark on such a dangerous mission, he'd either have to believe in the cause or gain something great from it.
The Aburame decided to follow Barney outside, as the meeting with the Captain had all but adjourned,

Panthalassa's mind was in a turmoil, though, as his friend kept talking, it seemed like Barney's was even more chaotic. He kept on speaking, but his eyes and atention flickered in and out, like something was visibly distracting him. While Panthalassa wanted nothing more than to reminisce on their journey together and the task at hand, he was unable to focus out of worry for his friend.

Especially when, at the end of it, Barney seemingly shouted out to himself, which did startle the Aburame. Panthalassa looked around to see if any rebel had witnessed this outburst. So far, they appeared to be alone in the woods, and, other than a very startled deer, they seemed to be alone.

My friend, I think we should speak about this somewhere else. But we do have a decision to make.

Niashin was soundly at rest within his tent, a headache pulsing at the corner of his forehead. “Ugh, damned medicine can’t take affect already…” he said, taking a bottle of pills from his coat and reading it. However it was moments after this that a scream can be heard. At first he ignored it, but when more and more screams started to occur he couldn’t remain idle. “What the hell is going on out here?!” he called out, but in that immediate moment he arrived to see…bodies. Almost everyone present…lifeless, wide eyed he approached his former right hand man, not lying with diluted eyes. “Nanashi, speak to me! What’s going on…” he tried to finish his speech, as he suddenly clenched his chest. As he breathed in and out, it became sharper and sharper. Niashin dropped to the ground, clenching his chest as the world around him started to become blurred. “It…can’t end like this…can it…?” he questioned, unable to get an answer from anyone. The entire camp, was dead. No one remained alive, not even the great Rebel Leader, Niashin.

Barney and Panthalassa arrived at the rebel camp looking for captain Niashin, however the whole camp was dead. It seemed as if the rebels were set on an unrighteous course to usurp Madara when they were in fact living on bought time. It wouldn't surprise that they were all dead since they were all primitive brawlers and no life scum that gravitated towards the mass just for the sake of socialisation and to pass their days with drinks and hookers. Barney and Panthalassa would nevertheless scour around the camp in search for anything that could benefit them in their own ventures.

Mission Start

Reflect upon the events of the world

Panthalassa arrived together with Barney to the same sight has him. It took one look at his friends facial expression for the Aburame to guess what he was thinking. And although Barney's face had the slight tint of scorn in it, Panthalassa shared the same sentiment.

The unorganized rebels were living on borrowed time, yet seemed to be the most eager to take their place in the throne. They had been in enough villages to understand that most of the people they had spoken to were afflicted by the immortality plague and survived solely because of it. That was the plague that was filling up the streets to the brim, but it seems the most volatile and fickle ones were also the one that held the most rebellious thoughts.

Oh Natural Selection, Panthalassa joked with Barney. In truth, going through the trauma might have desensitized Panthalassa a bit from the greedy people that tried to take everything for themselves, of loosely or recklessly carried out their life. He had been tempted to join the rebel's cause, but it turned out less altruistic that Niashin had made it seem.

Panthalassa and Barney rummaged around the campfire to find all sorts of dark secrets, like treasure chests with stolen goods, most likely "Deeds & Taxes", several drug tools and remains, and even a few children tied down in chains to tents that were just as dead as their naked masters.

Barney, maybe Alucard was right. We are completly outclassed by these Gods... When they took Death away, people changed. Having no consequences can bring out the worse in humanity.

Panthalassa kept on walking away from the camp to see a old woman with her hands wrapped around her 3 of dead children. Her flesh was vibibly undernourished, but her kids were faring much better. He ducked down to meet them eye level. To feed others before oneself, sacrifice. Panthalassa could tell that neither of the children looked like this woman, which made his heart clench even more.

But we can't throw our backs on our humanity. There are still lessons to be learned from our flawed selves. Let's go see this Marzipan dude. Marzan... sorry sorry

"I agree my friend, which makes me want to do 1 thing, hold on." Just before they turned to leave, Barney noticed Niashin's dead body in the sea of death that was surrounding them. He really had to take a leak since it's been quite a while. It was such a relief, pissing on Niashin's dead body. Luckily they were all dead and nobody around to dry snitch on Barney. After finishing his ordeal he walked back to Panthalassa and they made their way to the shore. "Now we can go."

Leaving landmark with Panthalassa.

Weirwood Forest

The deeply forested area was one of the few that weren’t as devastated in the Cataclysm, though it changed just as dramatically in the aftermath. As deaths piled up, locals adopted a new tradition to carving faces in trees in remembrance of their lost friends. Named the Weirwood Forest, many travel to these forests to pay their respects to the dead as well as to pray.
Present Day, Sunrise.

A heavily cloaked man kneeled in front of the trees, faces carved intricately into them. Each face was different, some appeared young, some old but they all shared the same expression as the man's fingers traced one of the tears seemingly etched into the bark: Pain. They were faces of those who suffered when the Cataclysm caused the moon to rain down on the Land of Fire. Faces of mothers fleeing with her young, carved in trees next to them. Faces of friends buried under the mountains that fell. Faces of soldiers who came from homes they would never return to. Faces of "Family," the kneeling man muttered somberly, his head lowered out of respect. He had cared for these people like his own, and like his own...

The man prayed silently to the Weirwood Faces as another stood near him, watching with a curious expression on her face. She had only accompanied him to the forest once before and just like the last time, she stood confused as to why he would come here knowing it only bought him pain. Nonetheless, she stood watch silently, her hand upon her sword. Hours went by and he continued to pray, now moving around different trees to pay his respect as he did every weekend. One by one, he reached the trees, speaking to them individually as he prayed for their families to find peace and fortune after all that happened to them.

Finally, he reached the center most Tree, the largest of them all. A lone face was carved into it but with such detail, it appeared as if the face would open its eyes to speak with its wooden lips. As he kneeled, he removed his cloak and placed it in front of him neatly, almoat as if it were an offering. He mumbled a few words as a prayer before raising, too hung the face's cheek as he turned to the woman, prompting her to speak.

"Lord Commander," she said, her irascible nature showing as she said it mockingly. "It seems the forest grows with faces monthly. At this rate, you will be commanding the dead."

Walking past her, he motioned for them to make their exit. "Even the dead do not rest, my friend. It is why they weep, to let us know they are still with us on this hell of a world." As he spoke, his hand unconsciously moved to the scar on his forehead, tracing it. "They speak to us, whispering warnings and prophecies."

The woman snorted at the idea the trees were alive. "Then perhaps they can tell us how to stop the rest of them from dying."

As they exited the forest, he turned to her once more. "We are in precarious times. I need to speak with the Black Ones to be sure Kaida is ready for the task I asked of him. Make sure the Ravens are prepared, its almost time."

"Yes, Lord Commander Konoe, it will be done as you wish, my liege" the woman said sarcastically, but Konoe merely smiled as she departed. Two years ago, it was near impossible to even think she could work with him but now....
