I don't really see the point in all of this talk about states leaving the Union. Especially, for the reasons that people keep citing. Instead of running from a problem and potentially creating an even worse situation, people (like Gov. Perry) should use their positions to confront issues and change political policies. If you feel that the Government is not listening to you, form a political action group, run for office, vote, etc. In other words, take action instead of threatening to leave.
Furthermore, I don't think the states that want to secede would do very well on their own. Relatively small, independent nations are not fairing too well globally. If you look at current trends, most nations are merging together to create larger alliances and geo-political entities to compete with the likes of the United States, China, the EU, NATO and OPEC.
While certain states (namely Texas) has a relatively large economic base and a high GDP overall, even they would likely falter if they were to become independent countries. The largest employer in most states is the GOVERNMENT, which means that unemployment would initially skyrocket if a state were to secede. Additionally, the vast majority of people that do not agree with the current political policies in America are from relatively rural states with small populations and high agricultural output (Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas, etc.). If these states were to become independent, they would likely have an issue offloading all of their food and produce. I highly doubt that the United States would continue to rely on another country for its food supply. Energy is one thing, but I don't think that there is a single country in the world that cannot produce its own food supply.
Then there's the military. Again, the largest employer in most states is the Government, and this includes the industrial-military complex. This means the suppliers, support personnel, infrastructure, maintenance, R&D, the Soldiers, and many other aspects that would likely dwindle if states were to secede. I don't really see Alabama, Louisiana, or Mississippi really needing their own military. Texas probably could sustain a military, but a lot of the existing defense contractors and developers would likely relocate.
I could go on about why people shouldn't support succession, but I've had my fun and honestly have lost interest.
