No Sasuke the spoiled child made all the wrong choices in life and its now paying for them, thats why after His defeat at the hands of Naruto Sasuke when into the wilderness as an act of contrition for the forgiveness of His sines. There's still some credence to SenseiSama's claim. People still harbor fear regardless of their status; Kakashi illustrates this perfectly. Despite being surrounded by fear and loss, he still feared Orochimaru and his father was Sakumo whose legacy breeds courage, now cowardice. Naruto did not waver because he failed to understand the gravity of the situation, this is explicitly why Jiraiya expresses concern upon Naruto's foreseeable encounters with the Akatsuki because Naruto's recklessness causes him approach situations injudiciously and temerariously.
But you're correct, as a leader, one shouldn't be a deer caught in the headlights and Naruto & Sakura both required Sasuke's leadership to succeed which is impossible when Sasuke is oppressed by excruciating fear and thus, makes egregious decisions that jeopardizes the safety of his team.
