[Theory] Sage mode requirements

Lately I have been thinking about sage mode and it's origins and something interesting came to my attention when I did some extra manga reading on sage mode and the toads.

ONLY 4 shinobi have used sage mode, this is quite staggering. Naruto and Jiraiya are sages of recent times the only other two sages are Ma and Pa frog and they are approx 800 years old. So at least 800 years has past until the next two sages appeared (Naruto and Jiraiya). As you can see there's a very short list to the sage club. Note there's a lot of shinobi that have failed in the past,all the frog stone statues at toad mountain.

So far all we know about sage mode is you need large amounts of chakra AND guts. Surely there must have been shinobi in the past with those attributes and yet so many have failed. Not even many toads can use sage mode, only Pa and Ma frog can use it so a toad contract doesn't increase the chances either. There is also the Great Toad Sage (大ガマ仙人, Ōgama Sennin).

"Sage" can also refer to an individual renowned for their great power, wisdom, or holy standing. I think the Great Toad Sage is called a sage because hes lived a long time and with age(1000+) comes wisdom, also lets not forget he can see the future in his dreams adding to his all knowing demeanor. Similarly the Sage of Six Paths also could have been called a sage for same reasons. He was the first to understand the mysteries of chakra illustrating his wisdom, which back then would have looked godlike among others. Not to mention he had great power to save the world from the Jubi and got even more power after he became its host. And finally he also was a holy man, he originally was Monk and started to preach a his own religion, Nin-shuu which later became modern ninjutsu but used for power not peace like the So6P intended.

So I'm assuming, the Great Toad Sage and the Sage of 6 paths are sages because of their wisdom/power/holiness. Other wise you'd think pa frog would mention the Great Toad Sage as one of Naruto's predecessor of sage mode. But I can be wrong, if either one of them are shown using sage mode in the future.

There must be a unique requirement to use sage mode similar to bloodline limits, only time will tell.

Some people are thinking that Sage mode is a bloodline limit but there has been 4 sages seen using sage arts all of which are not genetically related. So bloodline limit is not a good way to describe this rarity in the history of Naruto.

Another possible theory going around is, maybe just like how a shinobi has an affinity to a certain nature element like wind, a shinobi may need an affinity to Natural energy to use sage mode. This could explain why only 4 shinobi in the history of Naruto have used sage mode. This actually doesn't sound so far fetched as you can have an affinity to a certain animal to use it as a summoning. Jiraiya had a very good affinity to the toads as he was able to come into contact with the toads even before signing a blood contact via the summoning technique. This could have something to with the degree of how well you are able to use natural energy. Though you could also argue this was fate as the toad sage predicted this would happen and same goes for Naruto in a way, as he too ended up being the destined child which the toad sage predicted also. The toad sage didn't predicted it would be Naruto but he did predict it would be one of Jiraiya's students.

I think this is quite interesting and I'm hoping Kishi elaborates more about Sage Mode's origins.

u forgot to mention minato cuz when ma and pa said that he has surpassed its previous users both minato and jiraya apeared meaning that minato was also a sage.

Ma didn't say he surpassed previous users she said he surpassed those who came before him.

Sage Mode Requirements:
1. large amounts of chakra
2. ability to sense and gather natural energy. (For Naruto, since he's in a hurry to learn the technique. Fukasaku introduce the used the sacred frog oil to speedup Naruto's learning process.)
3. good chakra control and balancing skill.
4. guts

Also, I don't think that Minato have learn the Sage Mode. But there's a possibility the he could learn it if he didn't die in the manga early.

There are many characters in Narutoverse that have the capacity to learn this technique. But unfortunately, only those chosen by the frogs only have the chance learn it. And I don't think they will teach this technique to Madara even if he's the most skilled shinobi of all.

I am so tired of explaining that Minato wasn't a Sage based on the current evidence that it is not even funny.

We know he can summon. That does not make him a Sage. In order to be a Sage, you have to have a high chakra level to draw in Natural energy. That is why it is best suited for people like Jiraiya, Naruto, Kisame and other people who can fight endlessly. Look at Jiraiya's battles. It's ninjutsu after ninjutsu with him because he has high chakra. Kakashi couldn't pull that off. Naruto could if he had knowledge of more ninjutsu. We have NO evidence to support that Minato had the chakra level of Jiraiya or Naruto. Naruto's chakra being high is a result of him being the Kyuubi jinchuuriki. His healing ability is also from the Kyuubi as well. Minato wasn't the jinchuuriki of the Kyuubi.

Minato MAY have been a Sage, but it is unlikely because I am sure that Fukasaku would have mentioned it to Naruto during the training. He would have said "It took the 4th a long time to master this".

OK, but naruto's high chakra is natural for him, he has three to four times the normal ninja and he also has the nine-tail chakra. Even without the fox's power naruto still would have more chakra than most. We cannot say fukasaku would have mentioned the fth in naruto's training. so far the only person to talk about the 4th to naruto is kakashi. no other ninja has not even j-man(like he should have) have talk to naruto about the 4th.

The sage mode requirement i guess

1. Guts
2. Large amount of chakra
3. Able to sit still or something or we can just call it balance
because the user will need to take in natural chakra/energy

Hey psukkar I like how you ran off and never admitted defeat in that other thread about Kakashi's chakra natures when you were clearly wrong.

Anyways, on topic. I agree with you here that they must have some special qualifications to be able to use sage mode. However, there is no evidence that there are only 4 sages ever. There may have been more peppered through history but there's really no reason to spend any time discussing them because they're irrelevant. You're forgetting one known sage anyway: the Great Toad Sage of Myoboku Mountain (the old geezer toad that sees the visions or w/e). Another likely candidate is Rikudou Sennin but this is just a guess. He was the father of ninjutsu and all so maybe senjutsu as well...

therewere some predictions made according to my bro by some1 who helps in making / editing naruto and he made predictions / gave away spoilers which have been coming true so far and one is that the old toad has some sort of connection with rikkudo and he is really old so it can be possible. And so my point is that i think sage mode requires you to myb have the " body " of the rikkudo like naruto and thats the only way naruto can be equal with sasuke cuz imagine ( this isnt possible ) they both were kyuubi jinchuriki and controlled the kyuubi sasuke would have the advantage of his eyes and sasuke is uchicha " eyes " of rikkudo and to be equal naruto has the " body " including his sage mode and having a strong body in general. Also IF sasuke got sage mode ( obv toads wouldnt train him ) that would be op. and just a separate note whos to say you cant learn sage mode from other animals
