Wasn't he was the one who wrote the tablet on how to get the Rinnegan....Plus the Rinnegan is the progression from the sharingan....So..He had to get the Rinnegan before he fought the Juubi or died...and came back with it..Remember Senju and Uchiha was one...So he had Physcial powers and Mental Power + Eyes....So theres a chance he had Rinnegan before he fought the Juubi

i told you i was speculating =p, but back on topic i told you he sealed it in him thus getting it from the juubi after a while the rinnegan became his genes and once he had his 2 son those genes split up senju/uchia he could of discovered a way to unlock without having the juubi thus the creation of the tablet i know it sounds far fetched but he is the creator of all jutsu and everything he isnt a dummy. i also plan on making a another theory on that tablet too i think you'll like it.

I believe tha sage used a seal like Naruto's and as we know Naruto has Kurama's Yang chakra. I think the Juubi's yang chakra formed the "body" he passed on to the younger brother and it's yin chakra formed the "eyes" he gave to the older brother. I really like this theory becasue it makes sense based on what we've seen.

Kurama's Yang transformation resemble's the sage's body.
The Juubi seemed to have the Rinnegan and Sharingan.

I don't remember Nagato saying that. Nagato had the Rinnegan when he was first introduced into the series as a child. It was the main reason his eyes were always hidden. Then when his parents died Nagato used the Rinnegan through his emotions which obviously he couldn't control the power of the Rinnegan at that time. Tobi claims he gave Nagato the Rinnegan. It is then later revealed that the Rinnegan is a evolved form of the sharigan that Madara unlocked. Which will most likely mean that Tobi gave Nagato Madara's Rinnegan. Because if you think about it, what did Tobi do with Madara's Rinnegan if he had to take Nagato's? This would mean that Nagato's Rinnegan was really Madara's eyes transplanted into him. Which makes sense because what is the first thing Madara says when he steps out of his coffin after being revived through Edo Tensei? He said "That brat Nagato has finally grown". This connects to what Tobi said about giving Nagato the Rinnegan.

Sharingan, most likely, only progresses into the Rinnegan because it is a de-evolved version. Secondly, the sage probably wrote the Tablet later in life after he had sealed the Juubi within himself to pass it on to his descendants. Also, the Sage is the progenitor of the senju and uchiiha clans, but it doesn't mean the abilities they inherited were always a part of the sage.
