I would rather have the dog for its tracking abilities and stealth.

The toads are great for attacks and whatnot, but I would rather have enough awesome attacks that I don't need the backup! xd

So basically you're comparing apples and oranges here. Dog = for tracking and carrying messages, Toad = for battle
