The 8 gates themselves allow this? Yes, I agree. But, there is a huge catch. Gai has never entered any gate instantly or at the snap of his fingers. They take a few seconds to initiate and the last attack took a large prep time before he actually initiated this 'distorted space' attack. Kakashi or any other ninja can easily take advantage of the lag between gates initiation.

It isn't as cut and dry as you people imagine.

It took Gai a full chapter to activate the final gate. In that prep time, Kakashi snipes him off. It just proves Gai needs to kill himself to reach Kakashi's level.

Kakashi using sharingan = 6th Gate Gai
Kakashi using Kamui/opening 1th gate = 7th Gate Gai

Kakashi using Kamui and opening 1th Gate(would not last long) > 7th Gate Gai, but difference would be not that big.

8th Gate Gai >>> Any Kakkashi
