If rushing them doesn't work out for you then try a poison character. On generations I would just circle around the character (you can literally avoid the clay bombs by walking and not even dashing or jumping) and throwing poison chakra shuriken at them every 30 seconds or so. Part 1 Ino & Shippuden Ino can both do this. It's a very useful thing to have.

Plus with poison slowly killing them in the air they have no choice but to come down and fight you fairly and guess what?! Deidaras not that good at actual combat! Boom- you're suddenly in the lead.
