Series Summary
Yu Yu Hakusho is about the boy named Yusuke Urameshi. Yusuke is the typical delinquent in school. He does not show up to class, when he does he wears the wrong color uniform to piss people off, and he likes to pick fights with a lot of people. Yusuke acts like this because he didn't have a great childhood. His father wasn't there when he grew up, and his mother is a heavy alcoholic. One day, Yusuke sacrifices himself to save a child from a car. With that being said, his ghost starts rising into the sky. Until a young woman from the Spirit World named Botan says hi. The Spirit World was very surprised that a delinquent like Yusuke had the courage to do a heroic action. So they decide to give him another chance to live. Of course it wasn't an easy task. The task was dependent on his friends rather than himself. As Yusuke returns to life, the son of King Enma; Koenma declares Yusuke as a Spirit Detective, and that is the point where Yusuke's adventure starts. Master Genkai helps Yusuke hone his spiritual prowess to help him go on missions that Koenma gives him. As Yusuke goes does his duty as Spirit Detective, he not only gets bonding time with a friend, but also make new friends along the way. Yusuke's duty eventually lead him to something called the Dark Tournament. Yusuke was forced to join this tournament by a powerful foe named Toguro by threatening Yusuke. After this arc, Yusuke goes on a mission to stop a planetary threat who turns out to be a former Spirit Detective for Koenma. Yusuke then goes to Demon World to find his roots and to find out why some inhumane things have been happening to him.
Critical Review
This is an incredibly story. It has incredible action, the suspense got to me and it was even better watching as a kid. Togashi Yoshihiro does a splendid job in developing his characters. Even the side characters like Yusuke's friends, they get plenty of character development. Characterization is Togashi's best trait when it comes to writing a story. Yusuke is probably one of the best main characters I have ever witnessed. The typical shounen main characters today like Naruto, Ichigo, Luffy, Natsu etc. don't even come close to being as good of a main character as Yusuke. And Yusuke isn't even the best character in the story of Yu Yu Hakusho. Togashi did the villains better than he did the main character. Younger Toguro and Sensui Shinobu are incredible villains. Togashi Yoshihiro clearly explains their psychological structure on why they became a villain. Their reasons for becoming villains are just superb. The problem with Younger Toguro was that he did not have enough strength to protect his comrades when he was younger. One would think that his resolve would simply be revenge, but no. Toguro goes to the extreme. I was completely shocked on why he did the things that he did. Shocked, but made perfect sense. The same goes for Sensui Shinobu. You would expect a simple resolve like revenge from a villain, but he goes to the extreme. Once their back-stories are explained, you will be in shock because the actions that they took may seem hardcore and contradicting, but the reasons why they do those actions are justified greatly. Overall, the author Togashi Yoshihiro is an expert at characterization. The action was also superb. Towards the end of the show, fights look like the fights from Dragon Ball. All fast paced, in the air, trading punches rapidly, all just insane. The only problem I noticed in this story was the pacing of the final arc. The final arc was very rushed. Rushing the final arc is not good. There were a lot of missed opportunities in the final arc. I give this Anime a 9/10. Yu Yu Hakusho is very underrated because of one reason; the release date. It started publishing during 1990. The most popular manga at that time was obviously Dragon Ball Z. Yu Yu Hakusho was always shadowed by Dragon Ball. But I guarantee that one will enjoy watching this Anime. If you like Bleach, then you are sure to like Yu Yu Hakusho as well.

Yeah, YYH > DBZ  It's pretty underrated, I agree. The series could use a remake, seeing how the older 90s series are getting remakes now.
