As title says... I can understand that Zabuza was a first villain and therefore people tend to forget about him and overhype recently shown shinobi/jutsu but still - he's really underrated. :| I even hear some people say that Hidan is on a whole different level...
First of all, Zabuza killed a hundred of students finishing the academy before he even received any ninja training. This is a feat comparable to Itachi killing his clan (though with Tobi's help, but this isn't the point here).
Next, Zabuza was powerful enough to try the assassination of Mizukage, who was in fact Tobi at this time. Even though he failed, he still made it out alive, which is a proof he was more than just a jonin.
A lot of people also say he's dumb and I don't really know from where aquire take such information. Zabuza's intellect wasn't outstanding, especially compared to people like Kakashi, Shikamaru or Itachi, but he wasn't dumb at all. After fighting Kakashi once he was able to find out how Sharingan genjutsu worked, even going as far as differentiating between its two stages (hypnotic eye and the other one).
The last thing is his specialty - Silent Killing. It was said that no one was as proficient in this technique as Zabuza. He therefore has a potential to 1-hit-KO many of high-tier shinobi, maybe even kage.
Then we can add up the hype - Zabuza's generation of swordsmen was said to be the most powerful one.
It's pretty sad when people compare him to guys like Hidan... Zabuza is better than him both in intellect and skills, even with Hidan's immortality, Zabuza could take him mid to high difficulty.
