Sage mode, or senjutsu, is the same concept as being a quincy in Bleach. If you think about it using sage mode is taking in the energy around you and using it as your own. The same applies to being a quincy. Depending on how familiar you are with bleach you may remember a chapter in the manga when Ishida touches Ichigo's zanpactou and his bow becomes twice its original size because he was taking in the energy around him.
