According to Freud when you boil it down. The cause of all unhappiness and misery are due to three reasons. The elements(basically nature), your mortality, and other people. Nature is obvious, earthquakes like the one in Nepal, thousands dead, survivors losing family, their homes just like that. Your mortality is also obvious, it makes you depressed thinking "what's the point if you're going to die anyway?". You also age everyday, law of entropy is in full effect and you're in constant battle with it, the struggle of that can make you miserable. Even if you give in, it'll destroy you when one day you realize how you're a shell of your former self, whether that's in your looks or performance, as they say "Age is the great equalizer", you think Brad Pitt looks hot? Wait untill he's old. You think that Perfect 10 you saw in the subway is so great? Wait untill she hits 30-35. The last source of your misery are other people, the drama, the jealousy, the hostility, the betrayal, the lack of trust, the unexpected change. While it's a fact that life can be greatest when shared with others, the same is also true of the opposite. You have a short life here but never let life discourage you, it can be the most evil bish but make sure you live it.

Immortality would be much more depressing than being mortal... I mean what is the point if we live forever anyway. Humans would have all the time without doing anything.

My one true fear is the thought that I may not be able to stay with the one I love forever.

Our desires, our want to be successful and our need to live happily all create misery, when someone cling in to these things saying my, mine and ours then it causes misery because it's not tend to last forever same way it has come to you, it may go away someday and that doesn't mean not to search for them but clinging in to them only gonna cause misery .

Just what I thought when I read this.

Well you can also embrace the elements, the aging process as well as other people (like you mentioned). At the end of the day it's about how you handle it - the setbacks as well as the heyday.
