I still think he's written pretty well. Yes, the Rin thing got old but people make a bigger deal about it then it was. That's issue when you get the manga chapter by chapter, week by week. Though I imagine your intentions were to strike a nerve and what I'm saying now doesn't really matter.

Kakashi and Itachi are more well-written than Obito.

He is a terrible character because he is a weak man. He fell at the first sign of any sort of adversary in his life. Really, what hardships did he have before? Not having a family? There's so many people in NV without one, it's not like he could miss what he never had. He had skill(unlocking a sharingan which is uncommon among uchiha), friendship and a dream. Yet, one close person to him dies, and suddenly his world is over. What kind of weak ass message is that? If you're a man, break down and give up all hope if someone you love dies? And he wanted to be hokage? Did he never expect Rin, or anyone else to ever die?
Kakashi did it the right way; He was dealt a shit hand, reshuffled the deck several times and kept getting a shit hand, yet he never gave up. He almost did, but he never gave up. That's a respectable character, someone who actually doesn't give up because 'hur dur, someone I cared about died, my life is ruined even though i'm full of other people around'.

Oh look another ignorant manga reader that just says a kid cried 30+ years over the same girl to be a villain.

For starters:

-Tobirama already explained how ****ed up Uchihas get when they experience the loss of someone close to them. This is definitely seen through Sasuke when he slaughtered Samurai/Danzo. Obito is not a sane, normal person which people need to stop seeing him as.

-Obito stated in chapter 629 that the example of what the Mist did to Rin is what opened his eyes to the horrors of the world. That's what motivated him to do something about it so nothing like Rin's case would ever happen again. The situation Rin was put in was the motivation, and the fact knowing she was basically a suicide bomb for the Mist, not her death herself.

-Obito had no parents or family, the only person he ever felt close to was Rin. Obito explains in chapter 655 that after her death he felt nothingness leading him to radically try to change the world.

^ Yea the whole constant Rin mentioning got old and sadly it's what doesn't do the character justice, but finally the anime is showing how understandable he was.

Also, what is "best written" character? One with a huge backstory and plot time? Or one with a deep story and less plot time?

From what i can tell there is no such thing as "best character"..since characters are designed for their specific purposes.. otherwise we would have no variety of characters..

Imagine having every character the same way.. o_O... uh i'm good.

I still like Obito, but I don't think he was the best written either. I feel like Kishi should have kept him as the final villain and his mask should not have been taken off until the end. I started to like him less after the mask was off, because he lost that mystery factor.

On the topic of Rin, it's a little of both and can be argued either way. It is Rin's death that triggered his change of heart, but also 2 years of years of being stuck in a cave with an old man who gave him endless speeches. He was manipulated. Rin just confirmed to him that the world sucked, so he went along with Madara and his ideals. He wanted to use Infinite Tsukyomi to prevent things like Rin's death happening again. But you could also wonder why he didn't think the world sucked sooner and it took the death of only one person to confirm it to him and throw away his entire past way of thinking, when in the first place he grew up during times of war and had already seen other deaths beforehand.

I think that Kakashi and Itachi are more well-written than Obito. But Obito is pretty decently written as well and has alot of development.

Obito lacks sinister backstory that strongly justifies his mindset (Tsukuyomi eye moon plan). All we knew about him is he had no parents, and the reason he turned evil is because of Rin, the girl that never returned the love back. Pretty ridiculous for an antagonist backstory. Its nothing compared to Sasuke, Nagato, and Madara.

Furthermore, his backstory doesn't reflect properly on his development. That is why he is extremely poorly written character.

Madara, Sasuke, Naruto, Nagato, Orochimaru, Danzo, Tobirama, Hashirama, Kakashi, Itachi, and many more have more depth than he does.

Please, for the love of God, someone explain to me how he's a well written character? No matter what angle I look at him from, all I see is a fusion of Naruto and Pain with a forced Kakashi plot and character development that is almost moment for moment from Pain.

He's up there for sure. I'd say that Sand characters are just overall well written. I guess that Kishi had to make up for their being the weakest village, so he gave them compelling characters. XD
