Now his eyes are a spiral not a ripple like the rinnegan. They don't have tomoe like the sharingan and they have pupils so they're not like the byakugan. Here's my theory of how those eyes came to be and they're relationship to the others:

1. Sage was hyuuga/uzumaki. His eldest son had hyuuga/uzumaki blood in him plus the juubis yin chakra. He originally had the byakugan but the juubis influence and chakra began seeping into it and turning it into a sharingan thus giving the juubi chakra more influence over him.

2. The sage realized this could lead him to hatred and performed an uzumaki seal on his eyes and the yin chakra thus negating the sharingan but putting the uzumaki-like spiral over his eyes.

3. Over time blood thinned and the seal weakened leading the younger generation ( uchihas ) to develop the sharingan under emotional stress unleashing the juubis yin chakra to corrupt them.

4. Meanwhile one of his children with lesser yin chakra and more yang chakra negated the juubi yin and branched off creating the hyuugas. The generations after this kept it in the clan or at least away from uchihas so the pure byakugan wouldn't become tainted.

It is indeed the sealed doujutsu of the Jūbi's Yin Power which later was broken by the Elder Son when he felt tremendous hatred towards his Younger Brother for being chosen as their father's successor, mutating the eyes into the Sharingan of the present day
