Here, we see that the Sage of the Six Paths created the Moon after he split the Juubi up into the nine Biju:
This means that the Sage of the Six Paths was not a jinchuuriki anymore, and shows that even while he was dying and sapped from all of the Juubi's chakra, he was still more than powerful enough to create the Moon, by far the greatest feat of power we've ever seen in the Narutoverse.
Now let's get into his Sons:
They were the direct inheritors of his power from when he was younger and thus even more powerful than when he was on his deathbed (and even then he was still powerful enough to create the Moon). Assuming that the Sage of the Six Paths' rinnegan has something to do with the Juubi's eye, it can also be assumed that the Sons were born while their father was the Juubi's jinchuuriki (and once again, they both inherited half of that power) as the Older Son received some weird variation of that dojutsu. This is supported by the fact that the Younger Son was radiating with power, something that only happened to the Sage of the Six Paths after he became the Juubi's jinchuuriki.
If the Sage of the Six Paths could create the Moon while he was dying and not a jinchuuriki anymore, then his Sons who each inherited half of his power when he was younger and the Juubi's jinchuuriki are obviously both fairly overpowered. I would go so far as to say that when their father created the Moon, he was not as powerful as them (I mean, he was dying and not a jinchuuriki anymore, while his Sons were still full of youth and inherited half of his power each while he was the Juubi's jinchuuriki).
I just don't see how Hashirama and Madara can compare.
Even now, Edo Madara, who not only has an undying body and unlimited chakra, but all of his techniques that he had as EMS Madara in addition to the rinnegan (which he apparently has some mastery over) and even a portion of Hashirama's strength was only stated to be but a portion of the Sage of the Six Paths' strength. And we don't even know if Kabuto was referring to the Sage of the Six Paths as the Juubi's jinchuuriki (which is likely not true, as Edo Madara still wants to become the Juubi's jinchuuriki even with all the power he has now).
EDIT: Thanks Silver.
